 Understanding Holistic Nutrition

HEALING & HEALTH

Health is often defined as: a state of physical, mental and social well-being accompanied by freedom from illness or pain

I personally believe that healing is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and growth that we take in an attempt to release ourselves from pain. Looking at every aspect of our life and increasing awareness about the effect that our thoughts, emotions and actions have on our well-being, on our environment and those around us then to try with the best of our abilities to change the aspects which are causing us harm.

WHAT IS HOLISTIC NUTRITION?

Holistic Nutrition (also referred to as Nutritional Therapy or Naturopathic Nutrition) focuses on the use of food and natural remedies to support the body's ability to heal itself.  The main guiding principal is that we are able to provide our bodies with all the necessary tools & materials needed to achieve and maintain optimum health.

Treatment is based on the understanding that all aspects of our lives can affect our state of physical, mental & emotional well-being. Disharmony in any area can create stress on the systems in the body which then increases our requirement for nutritional support. Making changes to our diet and lifestyle will not only encourage physical changes, it can also strengthen our mental and emotional states.

WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN HOLISTIC NUTRITION HELP WITH?

All symptoms from low energy, stress, anxiety, digestive upsets and headaches through to much deeper conditions, can benefit from Nutritional support.

DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES & NATUROPATHIC TREATMENTS

The Oriental FIVE ELEMENTS model is used to connect and group different thoughts, emotions & physical symptoms we experience. This system helps to evaluate overall level of health and establish which areas are out of balance.

Listed below are a few aspects within each element -

We can begin to restore our health with an understanding that everything we think and everything we put in our body affects us at a cellular level.

The manner in which we eat our food will also affect our ability to absorb the nutrients we need.  Do we sit and relax or are we eating on the move?  Do we eat fast and gulp down air or are we chewing our food properly?  If we are emotional or experience negative thoughts then our saliva becomes more acidic and if we're stressed then adrenaline causes our blood to move away from our digestive system. It's a good idea to aim to eat when we are calm, relaxed and happy as we create an alkaline environment in which nutrients can be digested more efficiently.

Understanding the healing power of nature and treating the whole person with the philosophy 'first, do no harm' was the foundation on which Naturopathy & Naturopathic Medicine were based. Remedies such as natural diet, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy (hot/cold showers, sitz baths, enemas) and castor oil packing are all used to restore harmony and aid the body back to health.

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN A CONSULTATION?

An initial meeting lasts approximately 2 hours during which we will talk about your current health concerns and what you are looking for support with. I will ask you questions about your lifestyle, family history, emotional wellbeing and diet as well as any physical symptoms you are experiencing.  When arranging a consultation, I ask that you keep a record of all food and drink you consume a week before your consultation.

We are all unique so a treatment plan will be tailored to suit your needs.  My objective is to find out what you are looking to achieve and to provide manageable solutions which will support the healing process.  Depending on your requirements, this can involve changes to diet, supplementation or natural techniques such as hydrotherapy, skin brushing & castor oil packing.

You will be provided handouts as required.
